They came through with both long-standing classics (Half Life and TF) and more low-key releases that turned into gold mines like Portal. I think the primary reason folks are :inlove: is because their record isn't nearly as spotty as bigger companies.

you'd kill their DLC.
What they fail to realize is that they can monetize the mods as well (the successful ones). It also extends the life-cycle of your game even more than DLC can ever do. I literally only played Battlefield 2 for some of the mods that were created. Like I said, just look at what Counter-strike and Team Fortress did for halflife and their company. Plus, it's only for the PC, its not like consoles have access to these modifications (thus they'd still buy the DLC).

:wtf: was half life really that serious when it got released

now they releasing consoles :wtf:

"Half Life" sold 10 mill, "Half Life 2" sold 12 mill. Then Steam dropped, which currently has 65 million users, more than Xbox Live.

"Half Life" changed the game. Most of the stuff people take for granted in FPS was fathered by the "HL" series. Action set pieces, physics, enemy/squad AI, all kinds of shyt, wasn't considered the norm until those games.

Peep this "Half Life" trailer from 1998:

Or this "Half Life 2" trailer from 2004:

You can see the inspiration for everything from "Battlefield" to "Bioshock" in those trailers.

They have a creative approach and actually push innovation without regurgitating the same crap and nickel n diming consumers unlike 99% of other devs

I know this, but EA's greed is so shortsighted it's rediculous.

after halflife, and counter-strike, STEAM was their bread and butter. Counter-strike's success was integral to everything because then you had other people use their halflife engine to make other successful mods, such as Team Fortress Classic, which they bought and later turned into a cash cow that is Team Fortress 2. Since people were making successful mods they got the idea of making the source engine and licensing it out to diff companies to make their games with. Steam was released around the time that the beta for the first counter-strike expansion and they built their success through the STEAM marketplace.

Something that pisses me off is companies like EA who used to release developer kits for battlefield no longer do that. You can't even imagine the amazing mods we're missing out on for Battlefield 3/4. They used to have star wars battlefield mods for BF2, and other interesting mods as well.

Aaaaaaw man that Star Wars battle field 2 mod is legendary breh :banderas:

The memories you brought back :to:
