Why isn't alcohol treated as a drug even though it clearly is?

I don't think Alcohol is that dangerous generally speaking. I had my first taste of alcohol as a little kid and it tasted bad, which threw me off for the longest. Even till this day I'm not drinking certain drinks because of the taste.

To me, I could be wrong because I don't do drugs, but I heard you get addicted to crack/heroin after that first hit because they start to chase that first high.

You're not getting drunk that first sip of alcohol.

It's socially accepted, and way less stigmatized. Also, marketing by celebrities, and the way it serves a purpose culturally. Those two things are re enforced through commercials, and sponsorships. A lot of that is easy to understand, in terms of marketing and advertising, but what's harder is the role alcohol plays in society. Picture a night club, and everyone drunk, now picture the same scene sober.

How are the men and women behaving? Alcohol is tied to sex and partying via anxiety relief/social inhibition in ways that we are not always aware of. That is one of it's base functions. It's not just having a few drinks, that's not what's fun, it's the permission that gives you.

I've been sober for 29 years now... summer of 1995....
you just one drink away, remember that.

Reason why i just conditioned myself to make a half gallon bottle last a year. i feel much safer against alcoholism or falling off the wagon, by learning and practicing discipline, rather than practicing abstention. Otherwise i'd be too stressed to go to weddings, parties, or social gatherings.

But i'm only being half serious, whatever works for you best is best.

Alcohol is considered a poison.

We consume it. But there's really no reason to.

Social constructs :manny: Our societies historically used alcohol as a food item with lots of calories, it made its way into our rituals and social practices, so it became part of the cultures...

We don't have the same history with other drugs that we had access to much later thanks to globalization (coffee is a particular case).

The medical sphere does consider it a psychoactive substance though.

I would say that those are the unintended consequences, in a sense. Or collateral damage.

No one really benefits from a DUI or wants to get into a fight when drunk, or verbally abuse a loved one....it's the softer affects that we need as a society, that we are kind of conditioned to think can only come from alcohol. But all the bad is what we are willing to pay for the good.

I haven't had a drink since I was 21, and that was in 2006, so I had a lot different 20's and 30's.

They tried to treat it as a drug during prohibition
But cacs loved consuming and selling it too much. America was at risk of having to jail too many cacs behind it so they reversed course and made alcohol synonymous with american culture. To the extent the person you're supposed to vote in a president is the guy you'd most like "having a beer with"
