Why isn't there a single great soccer player from the US?

Its sort of been mentioned but the college system in the US doesnt really work for soccer...players that messi are already playing pro ball by 18 and had been scouted by those teams for years at that point, played many tournaments on junior teams etc. In the US even if ur talented ur wasting valuable time playing high school and college ball against crappy competition. By the time u make it pro ur already years behind

americans need to just let it go. we will never be a player on the world stage because our best athletes don't play soccer. plus most americans play sports as a means to reach financial stability. trust, if MLS paid as well as the NBA, there would be a soccer pitch in every hood in america. also, internationally, aside from the developed european countries maybe, soccer players for the most part play with the hopes of someday representing their country. americans only fake that sort of patriotism.

Like I said, its going to take a large downswing in football and basketball to get soccer popular and the most athletic kids wanting to play.
Just imagine Westbrook and Rose out there.

Americans need to stop thinking soccer is all about athleticism. The best player (or 2nd best player, depending on who you ask) in the world is a 5'7' midget.
First of all, 98% of football players and about 90% of basketball players aren't equipped to play soccer. They're all too big. Soccer is an endurance sport.
