Why isn't there a single great soccer player from the US?

American hubris is a motherfukker. They think they can overwhelm their opponents with raw athleticism, just like they think they can subject a people with military strength.

Im a little surprised too. I mean I know we're eye balling the black population when we talk about this, but um, we do have a mexican population to support our soccer sport. why arent they stepping up?

Good point. Where I'm from one of the high school's that has been competing for championships for years is Bellarmine (San Jose). It's a private school with a bunch of rich kids that look like something out of 90210. I'm sure they have hired european coaches to help their kids.

Their campus looks like this

In contrast, the teams that they play against in the championship come from these farm towns where the population is majority mexican (Watsonville, Salinas), and are regular public schools. These kids are taught the game by their dads who have 9-5 blue collar jobs, a lot of which are in the agricultural industry. Most of these kids just end up getting regular jobs or playing community college ball after high school. The raw talent is there, but what would happen if they got legit coaching like other kids?

and I bet this school got an all black football team. we have a school like this in socal called notre dame and all they do is recruit inner city kids. how come they can't offer scholarships to the mexicans for soccer, is all Im sayin. mexicans are ALWAYS at the park playing soccer the way black kids are playing basketball. makes no sense. maybe all the scholarships are used on the inner city kids for basketball and football, I dunno.

C'mon breh:mjlol:

You're better than that

16 million in totals if you combine ESPN, Univision, and WatchESPN.

MLS ratings and attendance keep going up so much that ESPN just paid 250 million for the broadcast rights. EPL ratings on NBC Sports was up this season.

But sure, NOBODY watches soccer in America. :mjlol:

that's a silly comparison though. You're comparing a national team vs two pro teams...obviously the national interest is going to be greater for the soccer game. Especially considering its a once every 4 years event.

Thats because its USA on the shirts, that variable helps...

That wasn't the argument. He said nobody cares about soccer in America. You have to be willfully ignorant to think that's still the case.

It's not just the USA match. As a whole World Cup ratings are up 16% from 2010.

:wtf: yall really gonna compare african american athletes to mexicans?

mexico has a 120 million talent pool and still mediocre at soccer. I don't see how importing mexicans would improve our team.

Breh, you are comparing a national team that only plays once a year, to a series that occurs every year between two specific cities?!

I am sure that some swimming and gymnastic olympic events obliterate the WC viewership. Does that mean that the US really cares about swimming and gymnastics?:usure:

I know in my area, kids can only play on one school sports team per season. Soccer season starts in the fall (practice starts in the summer) and so does football. Nine times out of 10, an athletic kid will choose play football over soccer. I'd say this causes a lot of kids to fall out of the soccer realm.

I would never say that, when you 1/3 population of immigrants mostly coming from soccer playing nations, youre gonna have interest...

Now who else wanna fukk with Hollywood Court?
Football players wouldn't be able to carry the weight you see them carry now if hey played soccer. So you saying "imagine trying to body Peterson" sounds silly because its under the notion that its the 230lb Peterson you currently see on Sundays. Peterson would not be 230lbs if he played soccer. It's impossible to carry that much weight and muscle mass and run the 4-10 miles that soccer requires out of most players per game.

There are 200+lbs soccer players though, and Peterson is around 215-220lbs, he's not much heavier than Danny shyttu.

Forget the RBs, the guys that would be more in line with the build of soccer players are WR, DBs and PG/SGs from the NBA. If the talent pool that makes up those positions had played soccer from the jump with America's bigger, faster, stronger motto we'd be a lot better than we are now :yeshrug:

Are MLS players now America’s “Boys of Summer?”

For the first time in the 20-year history of the ESPN Sports Poll, Major League Soccer has caught up with Major League Baseball in one significant marker of popularity.

Vote: Will MLS become one of U.S.'s Big Four?
In the survey, both leagues can claim 18 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds as avid fans of their sport, the poll said.

The ESPN Sports Poll Annual Report, which is managed by Luker on Trends, interviews 1,500 Americans

per month and tracks interest in 31 different sports. In 2012, the poll determined soccer was America's second-most popular sport for those aged 12-24, ahead of NBA, MLB and college football. Respondents are asked to rank their affinity for sports (how avid a fan they are), athletes, sponsorships and other trends.

The NFL led the poll with 39 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds saying they are avid fans. The NBA, NCAA football and NCAA basketball were all over 23 percent. The current poll was released on the eve of MLS’s 19th season.

And that's MLS, which is not close to a world class league.

Two different kinds of athletes play soccer, so that's not it.

Something I'd like to throw out there that hasn't been touched ...and maybe because this attitude is kind of dying out a bit....but I remember growing up that soccer was viewed as somewhat of a "girls sport". It was viewed more similar to volleyball or something, obviously men and women can play, but the typical suburban family with 2 kids had a boy that played football and basketball and a girl that played soccer and volleyball.

Pretty sure that some of those little league teams are mixed-competition.....girls playing with boys....:scusthov:

Vd4psUE.jpg

^ I sometimes think that this hurt more than help soccer here. Like maybe it calcified the sport as something that is more female focused...forever. Maybe I'm just tripping....:yeshrug:

To piggyback off that...I've not seen anyone really dive into the dichotomy between our womens team, and our mens team. Why is USWNT relatively successful while USMNT just average at best? Is there something that we can draw from this? I've heard it stated that the rest of the world generally couldn't give a fukk about womens soccer and that the US putting even a limited amount of resources into it is enough for us to be on par if not dominant. But I dunno. Is there anything more to glean?

Your right.
The US and Canada actually promote and support women's sports and soccer is the go to sport for women.

it's how USA women are #1 in the world and canada is top 7 and thier mens team didnt even qualify for the world cup.

We have to change the "soccer=girls sport" or "soccer= suburb kid sport" perception though.

Cause it's too many kids in the hood that would be much better at it than Football/basketball but wast they time trying to play those sports.
