Cause biologically they've been of birthing age for 12-13 years at that time, so old society practiced soon as she ripe she's ready to be wed. As time has advanced the age a woman is supposed to be has moved back due to society changing. A woman not supposing to be a teenage mother is a fairly recent thing.
