I remember buying SR3 off the strength of just how good SR1 and SR2 was. Man, I was so damn disappointed in that damn game. I traded it in within a week. It's been all downhill from there.
I was one of the few that got interested in the series at 3 and went back to 2 since everybody spoke so highly of it.

Them controls were so ass, I deleted that shyt immediately. I might try again somewhere down the line, but it just did not feel good control after SR3.

No matter what formula Saints Row had, they weren't going to stay relevant for many years.

GTA 4 and 5 technically were amazing games with graphics being better than their rivals. Plus add the fact that Rockstar made Red Dead Redemption franchise which also washed away other open world 3rd person shooting games.

Sleeping Dogs now that game was something fresh and I really wish they made a sequel. It was a proper True Crime type of game while other True Crime games had far too many technical issues.

After first two Saints Row games? I really felt no need for more of those. Like I played the 3rd game but I dont even remember the story, nothing besides it being corny. Meanwhile I remember GTA storyline pretty well even after many years of not playing any of them.

They tried to distance themselves from the GTA comparisons and controversy & got too cute.

They were the Checkers/Rallys of the open world crime genre after the first two games. Instead of accepting that they couldn't be McDonald's but could still profit, they ditched their menu to turn into a chicken spot & ran off the customers that just wanted some fries and a burger.

Series went off the rails with SR3 and instead of dialing it in, they doubled down & got even more outrageous. To top it off, instead of listening to fans and going back to a tone of something more aligned with the first two games, they rebooted the series with a cast of vegan Twitch streamers & Google employees because they knew better. People wanted an open world crime game with fantastical, over the top & satirical elements and instead kept receiving a fantastical, over the top and satirical game with open world crime elements.

Irony is with the 13 year gap between GTA V & VI, they would have had the entire market practically to themselves during a stretch where players were fiending for a new open world crime videogame.
