Why Sweden’s election promises to change the country

SWEDEN was long seen as the most progressive country in Europe, with its generous welfare state and openness towards refugees. But the national and regional elections on September 9th are likely to mark a turning point. The Sweden Democrats (SD), an anti-immigrant, Eurosceptic, populist party, are expected to increase their vote share to about 20% (up from 13% in 2014) and gain dozens of seats in the country’s 349-member parliament. The governing Social Democrats, the centre-left party that has led the country for most of the past 50 years, are polling at historic lows of 25% or less. The centre-right Moderates are doing even worse, at about 17%. Their allies on the right—the Christian Democrats, the Centre Party and the Liberals—may win enough votes to join them in a minority government, but it will be a weak coalition in a fragmented parliament. Meanwhile, outside Sweden, the election is seen as a test of the strength of Europe’s anti-immigrant right, three years after the migrant crisis of 2015.

In some ways the SD resemble similar outfits in other Nordic countries, such as Norway’s Progress Party, the Danish People’s Party and the Finns Party. But while those parties have all participated in government in one form or another, the SD have been shunned by the rest of the political establishment (as have the National Rally in France and the Alternative for Germany). This is partly because the party started out in the late 1980s as an explicitly racist outfit whose founders were in many cases neo-Nazis. Since Jimmie Akesson (pictured) became the leader in 2005, though, the SD have grown more moderate. They now say they want to reduce immigration sharply, not end it, and they attack Sweden’s lax integration policies, which they say lead to segregated ethnic neighbourhoods with high rates of unemployment. Their popularity has grown since the migrant crisis, when Sweden took in 163,000 refugees—more than any European country other than Germany. A rise in violent crime over the past two years, especially gun battles between gangs with immigrant backgrounds, has also helped their cause.

Yet the SD continue to back a number of unserious policies. They want to accept only refugees who have suffered oppression in neighbouring countries. (Since Sweden borders Norway, Finland and Denmark, they do not expect many.) They also include some unsavoury members, and in recent weeks have expelled over a dozen candidates found to have ties to racist groups such as the Nordic Resistance Movement. Since 2014, Sweden’s other parties, which fall into two broad alignments on the left and right, have agreed to shun the SD and allow the larger side to govern and pass budgets, even if it lacks a majority. While the Moderates suggest they may be willing to discuss some issues with the SD, their allies still promise to boycott them.

Immigration and crime are not Sweden’s only big issues. The country faces a severe housing shortage. The Social Democrats and their allies, the Greens and the Left party, want more subsidised social housing. The Moderates and their partners favour rent-control liberalisation and incentives for private development that guarantees some apartments for the poor. Then there is the decades-long decline in school quality. The left wants to renationalise the system and end government funding of private schools; right-wing parties want to keep it. The issue most on voters’ minds, according to a pre-election poll, is health care. But voters worried about health care split their votes among various parties. Those who care most about immigration opt overwhelmingly for the SD. A weak minority government will have a hard time addressing the issues Swedes think crucial. In the long run, the rest of the country’s parties may have no choice but to work with the populists.

It isn't the refugees on a fundamental level and it's amusing to see, as if the country's parliament didn't make the conscious decision for Sweden to deliberately and irrevocably become literally multicultural which of course, does not work anywhere in the world bar maybe NYC? It isn't the same thing as a multiracial/ethnic society.

As a matter of government policy, Sweden has had no interest in 'assimilating' anybody. None. The approach to immigration promotes anti-integration and the fostering of ethnic/religious enclaves, if not pseudo-parallel societies. The cities are heavily segregated. And then wonder why shyt is getting fukked up, this isn't rocket science.

Sweden's welfare state is also starting to come under a lot of strain. The Social Dems are currently pledging 30bn SEK on welfare up through 2022 if they win re-election but the National Institute of Economic Research has been saying that the country's municipalities will require at least 70bn over that duration.

Racists don't like immigrants. There's a lot of undercover racists. Sweden poorly handled their immigration situation. :yeshrug:

Or just blatantly open.

Norway been cracking down and deporting migrants all over the place and just had a right-wing coalition government re-elected last year. The same party (FrP) that Anders Breivik was long associated has been serving as junior partner alongside the Conservatives since 2013. The government itself has even produced and disseminated messages that portray the country in a racist and xenophobic light (fairly accurate) to dissuade migrants and asylum seekers from attempting to come.

She had to step down after saying the Labour party cares more about Muslim terrorists than Norwegian people, which was way out of line and played particularly bad given the worst terrorist attack in Norway's history was committed by an ethnic Norsk on the Labour party's youth organization.

What she actually looks like though:

Denmark has been getting harsh too.

www.nytimes.com/2018/07/01/world/europe/denmark-immigrant-ghettos.amp.html

COPENHAGEN — When Rokhaia Naassan gives birth in the coming days, she and her baby boy will enter a new category in the eyes of Danish law. Because she lives in a low-income immigrant neighborhood described by the government as a “ghetto,” Rokhaia will be what the Danish newspapers call a “ghetto parent” and he will be a “ghetto child.”

Starting at the age of 1, “ghetto children” must be separated from their families for at least 25 hours a week, not including nap time, for mandatory instruction in Danish values, including the traditions of Christmas and Easter, and Danish language. Noncompliance could result in a stoppage of welfare payments. Other Danish citizens are free to choose whether to enroll children in preschool up to the age of six.

Denmark’s government is introducing a new set of laws to regulate life in 25 low-income and heavily Muslim enclaves, saying that if families there do not willingly merge into the country’s mainstream, they should be compelled.

they've been getting a taste

Lot of Somalis in Sweden, I got an aunt who lives there for years

Plus Sweden and a lot of these Scandanavian countries have strong job markets too. They aren't going to become America, they'll just become more strict on immigration.

Yea, the 'socialist' multicultural wonderland they're sold as in the United States is a complete fabrication by people who have never been to any of those countries. Norway in particular is flat out right-wing on a sociopolitical and bureaucratic level, the others are following suit. If you ever go to Oslo, you would immediately notice how deeply segregated it is between west and east.

Even Angela Merkel said that in 2010. Multiethnic and Multicultural are not equivalent. That looks wack af by the way, nothing aesthetic about it. Blade Runner is aesthetic. What would be the point anyway, to troll? I make 0.17 posts per day on this forum and talk nothing but geopolitics and science. Also not a lot of alt-right living in SPhx with mixed race kids.

Privilege on the Precipice: Perceived Racial Status Threats Lead White Americans to Oppose Welfare Programs | Social Forces | Oxford Academic

Here, we integrate prior work to develop and test a theory of how perceived macro-level trends in racial standing shape whites’ views of welfare policy. We argue that when whites perceive threats to their relative advantage in the racial status hierarchy, their resentment of minorities increases. This increased resentment in turn leads whites to withdraw support for welfare programs when they perceive these programs to primarily benefit minorities.

Analysis of American National Election Studies data and two survey-embedded experiments support this reasoning. In Study 1, we find that whites’ racial resentment increased beginning in 2008, the year of Barack Obama’s successful presidential candidacy and a major economic downturn, the latter a factor previously shown to amplify racial threat effects. At the same time, whites’ opposition to welfare increased relative to minorities’.

In Study 2, we sought to better establish the causal effect of racial status threats. We found that experimentally presenting information suggesting that the white majority is rapidly declining increased whites’ opposition to welfare, and this effect was mediated by heightened racial resentment.

Finally, in Study 3 we found that threatening whites’ sense of their economic advantage over minorities led whites to report greater opposition to welfare programs, but only if these programs were portrayed as primarily benefiting minorities, not if they were portrayed as benefiting whites. These findings suggest that whites’ perceptions that minorities’ standing is rising can produce periods of “welfare backlash” in which adoption of policies restricting or curtailing welfare programs is more likely.
