on average, yes (by far)

better than season 1, no
i mean if we consider both at their best. there were plenty of seasons 24 was just going through the motions and was ok but not great.

IMO, it's not "good" like a Breaking Bad, Sopranos, Wire, or Mad Men. But it's entertaining. Everybody I know that liked 24 likes Homeland, and vice versa.

is Homeland better than 24?

It's made by the same people (Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa, Chip Johannessan) behind "24".

The major difference is the first season of "Homeland" is based on "Hatufim", an Israeli series by Gideon Raff. "Homeland" season 1 IMO is better than any season of "24", and if it maintained that level of quality it could've eventually been a GOAT contender. Season 1 is incredible.

The problem is, season 2 is Gordon/Gansa/Johannessan on their own, and it basically turns into "24". Which didn't bother me, because I was a huge fan of "24" back in the day. Some people say the show fell off in season 2 though.

Any place that has to do with rank or order, people will do that.

When I was at school we called everybody in gym or sports by last name because that's what coaches called 'em.

look at Slater on Saved By The Bizzell - that was his last name, but that's how he was introduced to them.
And he was from a military family.
