non of these explainations make sense. the ending/plot twist was anti climatic. They probably wrote that in at the last minute.

The explanations make perfect sense...Rorschach as never going to go along with the cover-up and he and everyone else knew that he would try to expose it so Dr. Manhattan killed him.
And it was written in 1986 by Alan Moore in the graphic novel so it wasn't tacked on.
Here are the two scenes from the movie and from the comic (the only difference is that Owlman was not there for Rorschach's death in the comic):

Some stuff don't play out well on the screen. I was hoping they didn't stick to the comic as much. Most graphic novels i read, I had no desire to see them turned into movies. This is one of them.

He knew if he exposed it, it would be worse in the long run, but also knew he wouldn't be able to stop himself exposing it.

He knew the only way to stop himself was to make the Doc kill him.
