I'm not saying you're not supposed to take care of your seed, but putting someone on child support if they are providing is letting the government run the home, and it's not supposed to be that way. I'm not saying that she should have. But really who else would have jumped in? He didn't deserve help and any other person who was saved who had some decency would at least say "thanks for saving me from an epic ass whooping" and he couldn't even do that.
