Why the hell would anyone want to be an animator?

The Truth
Passion. They love art more than anything else and are willing to take the low wages in pursuit of their dream. The sad reality is that a plurality of them burn out due to shyt conditions and are left with an extremely niche skill that does not translate to having a decent career which leaves them in an underemployed limbo.

They take the gamble of grinding away their prime years in the hopes of getting noticed by the right person or making enough noise until they’re undeniable by the industry . I can respect anyone who does that regardless of success.
Right

I make music but because I like to

If someone would be willing to pay me a liveable wage I would probably do that for a living too

What people don’t talk about is how if you have an original idea they will alter it to go with current trends

For instance one of my coworkers kids here in Japan is a Manga artist. He made this dope manga about a kid who gets special powers to summon ghosts in combat. They were originally gonna be scary ghosts from Japanese folklore. Instead because Demon Slayer and Pokémon are popular they made him give the main character a cut just like Tanjiro with a birthmark scar annd checkered yukata and changed the ghosts into cute Pokémon looking things.

You gotta float with that shyt too because if you go against the editors they’ll tank your shyt.

I could draw a little when I was younger but seeing how they treat artists really made me never want to go into that.

This is the correct answer, they would literally give their right nut to work on their favorite anime just for the honor. Like I mentioned in another thread most of my class have stayed in the same company for a decade or have switched career paths going into data analytics/viz or marketing. I have a good friend who is with a big media company in a management role who complains about leadership and wants to go back to being in the trenches. I told him how does you going back changes anything you need to move and make it better for others. There was a look on his like, “you’re right……. But I don’t wanna be that guy”

That being said they don’t get paid peanuts. I knew another one who worked on peak era Simpsons making well over 6 figures for 7 months of work. He said not many planned for those 5 months off and just tricked off on dumb shyt.

Too low for the stress and skill involved imo

Trust fam it’s not stressful it’s more monotonous, these dudes are not doing in between they’re doing keyframes and having pinoys do the heavy lifting. And even then they get paid above the average of a typical Filipino salaryman. If it’s stressful your boss just sucks or it’s poor planning.

well, thats america for you. most of the people i know make more. but on some real shyt... fukk animation :mjlol:

they breh @Batsute might have more insight tho

money wise, i work on the design side. everyone who works on an animated show, that is union. is making damn near 6 figures or more. BUT we live in california, and if u dont budget or dont get rolled over into a new show, that money u made prolly gotta get stretched into 1.5 yrs to 2. We dont really give AF about what people say about shows, cuz they not our ideas. its just damn work for a lot of us. Its like if a target employee got mad cuz somebody on IG was mad target brand lotion was trash. half the time we try to suggest to make shows better, and they ignore us.

my one dude has worked on family guy for like 15 yrs... he NEVER talks about that shyt, its the last thing he wants to talk about :russ:
