Ran across this video yesterday from CNBC, it's a good look into the history with facts of Xbox there overall goal and how the battle between them and Sony heated up but has never been the same end goal.
A lot of you don't understand the chess game that is going on.

This is what Microsoft set out to do from the jump with Xbox, you can even see clips of it in the video, they have stuck to that vision because they saw the shift starting years ago.
If not for the Xbox being in the game, these ps5 would be going on sell for 500-550 out the gate easily, if not more.
So yes games matters, exclusives games matter, but active users and software matter the most end game.
Selling a ton of consoles at a small profit or loss is great for your average man's bragging points but it doesn't actively paint the entire picture.

Videogame companies often sell hardware at thin margins or even at a loss because they profit from lucrative game software and recurring online subscription services. Sony’s Chief Executive Officer Kenichiro Yoshida has said the business should be judged by the number of active users, not the number of hardware units sold.

as much as you would like to make it a competition and then rely on nerd sales, that never will discredit the fact that microsoft has been controlling media and entertainment for far longer and wider than anyone, the whole world glosses over that fact and fails to see that microsoft is literally bridging the gap between the two mediums. By being stubborn and pointing fingers, people didnt realize that they already cornered this market years ago with PC gaming, it was just inevitable that they would finally merge on this level. Microsoft has all the tech to build high end anything they want and they already have it sitting there waiting. Not only are they developing all the breakthroughs in gaming on Microsofts systems and programs, but they develop it on PCs with hardware microsoft already uses for years. Pretending you are going to topple a juggernaut that breaths advancement and computing software is probably the most ridiculous thing you can tell yourself. Microsoft is global and makes money in their sleep off of PC industry, its literally how they made a trillion dollars and growing.
