Why USC and not a black college, Dr. Dre? - latimes.com

:ehh:

I'm on the fence with this one. Dre is from South Central and USC is in his backyard plus whites have always bought Dre's music as well as African Americans.. but USC's endowment is over $3 billion dollars and a upper tier HBCU would get a nice boost profile wise with a donation like this from two heavyweights in the entertainment field. I don't know:manny:

Not saying this is his reason but USC is a pretty good private school. They're not just donating money but in fact are trying to start a new degree/major. Starting it there would bring more clout to it imo than having it at a HBCU.

:shaq2: Let's be honest...

Pretty much all HBCUs are terribly mismanaged. Even, and especially, if you've gone to one (other than maybe Morehouse) you have to agree with that statement.

Dre isn't doing this out of charity. He doesn't want to help needy students...he's trying to spur innovation. And USC's standing in the entertainment industry makes it the best place to do that.

What HBCU has the infrastructure to make good use of this money?

What about Howard University in DC? They got a level of respect at least amongst the black elite

Don't get me wrong. There are great HBCUs, especially Howard, Morehouse, Spelman, FAMU....but even at those the administration is notoriously inept and getting a program of this stature off the ground would face a lot of red tape.

USC already has groundwork laid for this type of program given their great music and film programs, so that money is gonna go a long way.
