Why was Ray Allen given the "He Got Game" role?

Maybe I should post this in the film room, but I was young when this shyt dropped and really don't remember ray allen back then. How/why was he cast in this movie? Was dude that big? Or did he just have an interest in acting? Some connection to spike? I guess i never knew what led to him being in this movie.
