Why was the greatness of It Was Written ever questionable?

Exactly.

The transition from Ready To Die to LAD and Illmatic to IWW is damn near identical. (Grimey street NY kids telling their tales of struggle in the hood. To bigger than life Rap/drugdealer stars.) Im pretty sure BIG threw shots at Nas for copying the steeze.

Yet one is a universal acclaimed "movie like" album. While the other gets bashed for going too "commerical" :comeon: , The lyrics and concepts on IWW were iller than LAD too. LAD jus has it beat on overall presentation and the production of it.
Yeah --
Pardon my French but, uh, sometimes I get kind of
Peeved at these weak MC's with the
Supreme ballerlike lyrics.
I call em like I see em, G
Y'all nikkas sound like me
Y'all was grimy in the early 90s, far behind me

kick in the door and the message are never discussed like that, and while they shouldn't be, at least compared to actual hip-hop beefs - it was still friendly competition at its finest from the top 2 emcees at the time

Eh I'll still take Illmatic over IWW, it's just a flawless album front to back. Production, delivery/flow, cohesiveness, style, length, all perfect. IWW is pretty damn close to flawless, but not quite there. Like 9.9/10. Illmatic is my #1 album of all time, IWW is probably #4 or #5.

But Illmatic came out before Ready to Die, and IWW came out before LAD (and obviously Big wasn't around then). I guess Big was saying IWW copied Ready to Die, but idk I don't see it.

IT WAS WRITTEN HAS ALOT OF GEMS ON IT... BUT IT WAS JUST MAD SHALLOW COMPARED TO ILLMATIC....HIS BARS DEFINITELY IMPROVED...BUT HE WASNT REALLY TALKIN BOUT SHXT....STILL TRYNA FIGURE OUT WHAT "YOU'LL BE AIGHT LIKE BLOOD MONEY IN A PIMP'S CUM" MEANS....:mindblown:
According to rapgenius (lol), although I added some of my own explanation:
Blood money (money acquired through doing dirt/violence/crime) gets handed down to future generations of a family. Hence a pimp’s cum (seeds/kids), get his money, and will be "aight" (set for life financially).
"You'll be aight like a pimp's kids who inherit money"

I prefer Illmatic to IWW but I don't see why nikkas have to down one album to big up another. Just judge albums on their own merits, and by that standard IWW is a great/classic lp.

it was written is not commercial whatsoever
backpackers just wanted nas to stay at a kool g rap level
once he became more popular, sold records, and left their little underground world, he wasn't cool anymore and then moved on to the next guy

if i ruled the world is one of the most non commercial singles ever

Basically nas thought biggie copied him with ready to die (the cover atleast)
and big felt like nas took his ready to die formula (street album, but radio friendly singles) and used it on it was written.

"mc's used to be on some cruddy shyt (illmatic) took home, ready to die, listen, studied it/ Now they on some money shyt (it was written selling 2 milly,) successful out the blue"

cause the production was a huge let down from the first one. it's not like it's some kind of secret. the first time i ever actually heard that album reffered to as a classic was through the internet. it was a good album. nothing more, nothing less. the sad thing is i'm sure everyone would call it a classic had the production been more in line with illmatic. i never really looked down upon the whole drug kinpin gimmick...

lol.. stfu

classic example of why most Nas fans/critics never let Nas expand beyond Illmatic in their minds.

Old school backpackers are the worst

They rather listen to a nikka rap over an accapella with just drums playing saying "Thatsssss real HIP HAAAPPP" rather then actually listen to MUSIC

Illmatic was a great album obviously. But it lacks cohesion, like it was a mixtape of Nas' raps, instead of an actual album
It Was Written had more focus, like it was a movie

Illmatic lacks cohesion? What tracks are out of place on Illmatic? :wtf:

With that said, I'll never get the hate for IWW. It doesn't add up. Lyrically? Nas was on another level with IWW, the standouts on IWW were incredible, and the other songs were solid.

I like Illmatic more though, but IWW is classic or at least very, very close.
