It's nothing new. This has been going on in rap for a decade now at least. Before I would actually check out the albums multiple times to see what the hype was about, and if I was missing something, despite the fact that these albums were always trash.
Now I don't even bother. I wasted too much time trying to 'get' GKMC. There was nothing to get. It was a massively over-hyped, weak album. Kendrick's M.O. is validation, and his fans crave it. I'ma let em cook.
I always find Kendrick stans' hatred of Drake to be ironic.
How can you be a Kendrick fan and hate Drake, when Drake is the guy that put Kendrick on in multiple ways? put Kendrick on his album, wrote Swimming Pools, gave your album a boost by featuring on it, and gave him the Young Money sound for his single?
It's all the same vapid shyt. There's no difference between Drake and Kendrick at the end of the day. It's image driven, consumer pop rap. One is for the club (strippers, wannabes), the other is for the blogs (the awkward folk, hipsters, nerds). Except that Drake is better at what he does.
