#ColiFam gave more $ 2 my students than my school
So I'm (finally!) a librarian at Fair Eastsiiiiide Elementary School. Part of librarianship is weeding books - that is, getting rid of books that are dirty, old, etc. These two books were day one disposals:
Y'all. What the fukk. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I'm too exhausted to list a lot of the others, but I do remember a book on Rhodesia (really) and another one of Brer Rabbit on the Old Plantation. Lots of Asian kids w/slanted eyes, Mexicans in sombreros, etc. And those are only the kids books. I haven't even started the chapter books yet. I know the Little House books are so racist that they actually took the author's name off the award.

I wonder sometime if this isn't by design. Like the Brer Rabbit book could have easily taken place on a farm and it wouldn't have changed anything. A bunch of privileged cacs picking books for our kids...I went to library training this week from my district. The district is diverse as hell. But when I got to the librarian room...
Sad fact: only about 6% of school librarians are black. The number of black males? 1/2 of one percent. If you guys have any ideas or suggestions for books/ebooks/graphic novels) etc, I'll add them to my Amazon wish list. I didn't get approved for the Black Panther series (there's a few panels where BP is obviously clappin Storm's cheeks), but the middle school was allowed to take them. I *did* get permission for McDuffie's Fantastic Four, though, and I think Shuri is getting a series.
On the upside: remember when you all came together to buy gaming equipment for my FLS kids? Well, my new principal agreed to letting eSports be one of our afterschool programs. So my older students will be competing in the tournaments (Fortnite, SSBros, etc.) but my little guys will be using everything you all bought. The Larry Holmes Memorial Arcade lives on.

Laura Ingalls Wilder removed from book award over racist language
Her Little House on the Prairie series has been criticised for racist stereotypes of Native Americans.
