There was a time when, besides doctors and business people, it was mostly drug dealers who used them. Or at least that was the perception.

It was definitely a thing. Nobody else had a reason to have them unless they were a doctor. Drug dealers made it cool to have one for average folks. They did the same thing with cell phones tbh

It seems odd to the modern mind, but we didn't have to be able to be called on a phone number 24 hrs a day.
To some of you this makes all the sense in the world: to CONSTANTLY be in contact with others.
Back then you might go days without being able to get someone on the phone.
And they had to be home.
So whoever needed immediate contact at all times were doctors and drug dealers.

I got one when I was 14. I did start selling weed at 15 but I was only nickel and diming. I had absolutely no need for one. It was just cool to wear. Hardly anybody pager me except for my mother

Back then, nobody felt the need to be in constant contact.. People had shyt to do, mother took care of the kids after work, father had to stop by other family on other side of town after getting off.. He be home by supper time..
Because, if you were an adult, who needed to contact you that bad to where you’d have to find a pay phone or whatever to call them immediately?
