It is hardwired and genetic. Its directly tied to the fact females only produce one egg a month for a period of their life before menopause hits. Compare that to the fact men produce millions of sperm a day from puberty until they die. Because the reproductive machinery of women is limited it makes women far more picky in who they choose to get inbetween their legs. Hypergamy simply means women will move towards the best available male at all times because of how few eggs they make over a lifetime compared to how much sperm men make.
Something as simple as how much sperm men make a day versus how many eggs a woman makes over a lifetime affects how we behave as men and women.

Women choose men for 2 reasons: (1) good genes and (2) resources. Its been this way since the beginning of time. Good genes is basically what we describe as attractive in the opposite sex. When a woman finds a man attractive what she's actually being attracted to is his genetic profile similarly with men when it comes to what we find attractive in women. And most of the things we find attractive in the opposite sex are markers for good health. For example women find men with strong muscular builds attractive. That is a sign of a man who is in good health. In addition to good looks/genes, women also value what resources a man can provide. In many ways they value this attribute even more than good looks. And if you think about it logically it makes perfect sense. Just think of it this way. Lets say a woman in the ancient past had a choice between two men in her village. One is the most handsome guy in the village (which means he presumably has the best genetics) but he's a poor hunter. While the other guy is the best hunter in the village but has only average looks. Which man do you think the woman will choose?
Obviously she'll choose the guy who is the best hunter/provider. And the reason is simple. Even if she were to procreate with the best looking guy and get his genetic contribution to her children (thus putting her kids in the best position gene-wise) there is a strong likelihood her kids and her die of starvation since she choose to mate with a guy who couldn't bring food home to the table. Thus the good looking guys genes served no purpose in the long run since her children never reached adulthood so they can reproduce themselves. Now compare that to the guy who had average looks but was the best hunter in the village. If she procreates with him her children will not be as genetically fit as they could be but they will always have food on the table thus they will have a strong chance of surviving to adulthood and procreating themselves passing on her genes. This is why women to this day choose the best provider over the guy with the best genes/looks. Its a biological cost-benefit analysis that has always stood the test of time.
So what is the benefit for women to stay with men who cheat? Very simple. As long as the woman feels her genes are being passed on she will be content with it. Everything we do in life comes down to that simple reality. We are no different than every other animal on earth in that regard. We are driven to pass our genes on. And women will always try to get with the man who can help put her children in the best position to pass on her genes. Women will live with the cheating as long as he's also taking care of her children. The reason men have zero tolerance for cheating is because we have no interest in raising another man's child. So if a woman is cheating that means any child that pops outta her has a strong chance of not being his. That is why men have zero tolerance for cheating.

Whether or not hypergamy is backed by biological sciences is irrelevant. The "sciences" are now being used to advance agendas more than they are trying to tell the truth. Look no further than the gay and trans agenda being supported by "science". I'm pretty sure white feminists have been trying to scrub the sciences of hypergamy studies cause they got an agenda they're trying to push. All one has to do is look at the way women behave to know hypergamy is real.
