Any proof of this? What is the logic behind it? Motive? Endgame?

Search YouTube for master p at a music seminar.
Where he explains and confirms it as an old industry practice.

small brains will say it makes no sense
but it makes perfect sense

Think of this
I'm in IT
DELL buys business all the time, where they are in negative margins to win business
This is called buying business with the purpose of marketing and market share even if the market share is an illusion people will buy it

This happens and not only in the music industry

To say why would they use their money to buy their own albums is like saying why would they use their own money for marketing... advertising and TV spots

You would think it would hurt more than help, unless you're really tryna push this artist. Then I guess a lil loss isn't too bad if the reward next go around.... Well then wait, wouldn't not buying some of their albums next time show the real numbers?

It all still sounds like a bad idea to me. If you flop then better luck next time. If next time you flop again

One of things people just believe because they've heard it said so many times before without giving any serious thought to it...there's no real logic behind it...prolly originally stems from the actual factual practice of labels giving away negligible amounts of units away for promotional purposes (to radio stations as free prize give aways and things of that nature)...but the mass buying of albums on such a level that you "cook the books" for album sales reports and move the meter enough to effectively "give the illusion of success that somehow makes people buy more on the back end, negating the tremendous amounts of money wasted buying retail albums" has no basis in any kind of logic that makes sense

you are an idiot
there's no logic to it?

Imagine if JayZ releases an album and he only sells 80k

IMAGINE!!!!!!!

You think JayZ would allow that???

That'll be the end of him

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
you know on movie previews where they say "the number 1 movie in the country" that's for a reason. so everyone who didn't see it, or doesn't care about it, is now saying "hmmmmmmmmmm maybe i'll check it out". sometimes they fix it up "the number 1 action movie" that's because they are number 5 overall, but they still want the public to hear number 1. so they say it like that

so if your unknown and about to sell 100k, and jeezy is selling 150k, then the label might buy 75k albums. now for the rest of your life, you can say you had a number 1 album. that's not easy to do. you really only get one shot and that's the first week.

so now every show you do an interview on "introducing _______ he currently has the number 1 album" show money just went up "oh you want to book him? you know his last album was #1 in the country" people now care who you are "who's this new guy that's number 1, outselling jeezy? i might have to check him out"

they going for the long money in exchange for buying a couple albums. but really they don't have people in store buying them. you know how long and how many people you'd have to pay to find that many albums. they are paying off people to scan in more copies that are actually sold. so you buy a snoop cd, but the register man scans kendrick. it cost you nothin and your receipt says "cd" but soundscan just reads a sale for kendrick
