well the window for movies to come out on dvd/bluray has shrunk tremendously the past year. it used to take 8-12 months 10 years ago.. now its exactly 2 months after release they are out to buy.

movies are only in theatres for 3 weeks. I think purchasing the movie on demand same day as theatres will be the standard.

Maybe for shytty movies that flop, but not for the average flick.

That Hansel and Gretel just came out on video, and that was released late January. It was also shown on 1400+ screens for 6 weeks.

skyfall came out late november, it was out February 5th.

zero dark thirty came out mid january. it was out in mid march on bluray/dvd. I know a few of those animated movies that did well late last year came out in less than 3 months as well.

the window is shrinking.

funny you mention this. a lot of theaters in other countries don't put seats that close to the screen so theres no neck straining..that whole area near the screen is empty. I saw gatsby recently and had to sit in the 2nd row. :bryan:

 America
A lot of theaters are trying to do "reserved seating" but those teenagers with their first job dont enforce it at all and people still sit wherever. only the really fancy expensive ones that serve food enforce it.

the 2 main theaters i go to do reserved seating and have been for years, and ive yet to have one issue with it, but then again maybe you are speaking of hood theaters or something. For big blockbusters for example like man of steel i get the tickets like a week in advance, walk into the theater about 10 minutes before the previews start with no issue. Ive never had to sit in the front row, and if you pay for that when you dont want to thats on you not the theater

I went to a regular theatre when i had to sit near the front.

but some of the cheap movie and grill type theaters dont regulate the reserved seating..you buy a seat at the counter and someones already in that seat when you go in the theatre and its like :beli:

The more upscale ones i've gone to have ushers and make sure you get to sit where you paid for but with the dinner and all the amenities
you've looking at $120+ for two :merchant:

After this summer's Box Office Performance, I think this thread is very relevant. (*Mods I was actually trying to merge this thread with my new thread, could you move this to The Film Room) But I did a thread in the Film Room as they are reporting this is the Worst Summer Box Office Attendence since 1997, 17 years. It's clear people are moving away from theaters and Hollywood better see it before it's too late.

Not go away completely, but there will definitely not be as much around.

You can get whatever setup you want at home...you still need the people in there for the experience

I won't be surprised when we are able to watch new releases in the comfort of our own home.

Theaters will be the alternative. .. like drive ins are to theaters

The industry will never let this happen. If they let people watch major studio new releases from home it would kill the theater industry altogether. they make tons of money selling overpriced popcorn and snacks.

the theater industry is artificially kept alive. there isn't as much a demand for it as it is made to be the only way so see new releases day one. its an anarchic business model that should already be gone but the industry makes it necessary.
