will they have had their own distribution? No.

They would never be purely independent.

Being purely independent has nothing to do with distribution. Unless you opening up a factory, you gotta pay for distribution regardless who you are

yes it does have to do with distribution because someone else still has a say-so in what you are putting together. Matter fact, they have the biggest say so because you have to abide by their rules to get product on the shelves.

Thats why the feds shut down Suge Knight, J Prince and Irv Gotti trying to create their own distribution with the quickness.

True that. That's the reason why the killed Bill Cosby's son and brought up the Rape charges this year. Cause he wanted to buy a majority percentage of NBC

exactly.

The people at the tippy top of all black industries tried to get 100% freedom from the white man, but as soon as they do, they come for them. Jay-Z is smart (in a sense) because he stays in line and make sure the white man owns him and eats.

Biggest mistake rappers made is in the late 90s early 2000s not buying a cd factory. That shyt would of changed things

its deeper than that. Distribution is the relationships with corporations that got stuff on the shelves and its placement. Blacks would have to first get in a position to do deals with stores like Target/Best Buy to get those in-store and shelf placements. Now the main distributer is Apple.

Why can't nikkas just make a distribution company without much promo behind it?
Or use a nobody nikka to start it for them, and be the figurehead to through them off :patrice:

Sam Cooke had his own publishing company

Anyone can make one to be honest. All you have to do is know a few owners of mom & pop stores and bam, you have distribution. Its a bout having one that matters. J Prince, Irv & Suge had the relationships and power at one point that could have done this. They were heads of the 3 main coasts and responsible for the key movements/players on each one. It might have been difficult but they were in a position to get the relationships with the K-Marts/Targets/Best Buy/Circuit Cities across the US that put music in front of the casual shopper. As far as your publishing company, anyone can have that too (just sign up and bam, you have a publishing company)...its just that his didn't really matter (like 99% of the registered publishing companies) like a Warner/Chapelle Publishing does. Why? Because Sam Cooke or any other indie publisher doesn't have those big time relationships.

Also that nobody nikka shyt dont work because its a relationship thing at the end of the day. Remember: relationships > money . All the time.

You need huge stars to break away, kinda like what went on with MMA in the mid-late 2000's, whichever big star goes, people follow.

Through regardless "The Industry" mentality still exist because the main question that is asked with whatever CEO, whether it's in a board room of Apple, Warner Bros, Rhymesayers or two guys running bandcamp accounts in their dorm room: Is this worth putting out, and if so is it worth putting our money and time behind it?
