Its crazy because early during his movie stardom days I got a biography about Will Smith and in the book all he did was praise his father and talk about how his father kept him on the straight and narrow. Now the story has flipped and it comes out his dad was a piece of shyt….
Used to bring him to red carpet events too

"Dad was tough but not tyrannical. He kept me in line. He'd get this look that said, 'One more step. Will, and it will get ugly," Will mused to Essence magazine.

but both can be true, he could've been a good father to WIll and bad husband to his mother

True. Its just wild that he’s kind of shytting on his father now when not too long ago he made it seem like his father was basically a gruff but otherwise stellar parent and husband.

I’m not going to judge him for it. I just found it kind of weird because Will was one of those guys who you’d feel had a strong black father in his life who wasn’t on that domestic violence tip

He was younger and it seems like his going through a crisis since he turned 50. He was developing an image when he was younger but now I think it’s really therapeutic to him to reveal that shyt because people are seeing the cracks of the character he built for the public eye.

I read that was the dilemma, that while his dad was an alcoholic and abusive to his mom, he also made sure there was food on the table everyday, and he was at every game, recital, and movie premiere.

The Joseph Jackson effect

Same person who was a piece of shyt the same one who made you the success you are

I see your point bro. Only a woman can turn a man against his father. MJ didnt start talking about being abused by his pops until he had that interview with Oprah. I bet Jada brought this up to Will. and he been reflecting ever since. Jada looks like one of them over analyzing ass women . "He didnt discipline he abused you". The fathers back in day were tough love. That Denzel Washington movie Fences perfect example. "I brought you in this world and I can take you out" type shyt

Trauma will do that.

One of the reasons why punches didn't phase me as a kid is because none of them held up to my dad's backhand.

If you're getting smacked around by someone when you're a kid, you're not going to scale it against your strength as an adult. Psychologically it is going to feel like challenging the Hulk.

Yeah I remember the story about his father made him lay bricks during the summer to build discipline.....

This is a fact my former stepfather used to put his foot in my stomach literally amongst other things so when I got into fights shyt never really hurt.

I made up for it though when I was 18 nikka almost lost his eye fukking with me.....he said something you can't undo.

Here nor there It takes a while to get over trauma man I'm still a work in progress.

This actually explains a lot. It's probably why he lets alot of shyt slide. More maybe than he should.
Yep, he doesn’t wanna check Jada, because he doesn’t wanna anything remotely close to his pops in himself. That’s why he’s happy, smiling, gooofy, silly dad/husband. :wow:

Within everything that I have done since then — the awards and accolades, the spotlights and attention, the characters and the laughs — there has been a subtle string of apologies to my mother for my inaction that day," he says. "For failing her in the moment. For failing to stand up to my father. For being a coward."
