I think that sales are sometimes overrated and can be used either way to support a particular argument. I don't think that most black hip hop fans consider Eminem as a part of "our hip hop" culture. Em moves units yeah, but ain't nobody fukkin with Em in the hood and in these streets.

You could say Pitbull, Flo Rida are "movin units" but are we really fukkin with them like that? The South is pumpin out new atists and hit records like crazy and its been like that for 10 plus years. The South has molded hip hop culture and has influenced the sound and trends for over 10 years.

This isn't a shot at NY or any other region.

Besides Production and A few slang terms the south hasn't really had that much of an impact. I live in florida and everyone still tries to dress like they from ny wether they admit it or not. My cousin moved here from ny and everyone at our school was jocking his style and his slang. Hip Hop and urban culture especially fashion is meccaed in new york. Now musically the south had a prime but it fell off man , now you got rich homie quan which is going to be yung joc status in 2 years, so why even take pride in that. The only hope for the south at this point is RAIDER KLan

That's the problem, they putting out these gimmick rappers that are here today, gone tomorrow. Where's the longevity? Where's the substance and quality? Where is the impact? A bunch of fast food ass music

The complete list of every rap album to go gold or better, released in the past 2 years:

Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (platinum)
Young Jeezy - Thug Motivation 103 (gold)
Rick Ross - GFID (gold)

Kendrick Lamar - GKMC (platinum)
2Chainz - BOATS (gold)
T.I. - Troubleman (gold)
Lil Wayne - IANAHB2 (gold)
J. Cole - Born Sinner (gold)

Kanye West - Yeezus (gold)
Jay Z - MCHG (platinum)
Drake - NWTS (platinum)
Eminem - MMLP 2 (platinum)

So just off top, the idea that "southern rappers aren't selling" is a fallacy....they account fully half of all recent rap album plaques...That's not even accounting for the pervasive influence over the game the region is exerting...both within the genre (the "trap" sound spawning entire movements all over the country, from Chicago to Bay...and acts like French and ASAP who are the first breakout acts from NYC in years, having decidedly southern leanings...as well as Drake)...and outside the genre into pop culture as a whole (trap again birthing EDM sub genres internationally and Miley Cyrus' public transformation from Disney star to "twerking" pop-culture sensation, based entirely on her southern rap fandom and tutelage under southern producers)...and the domination of southern music on urban radio, where there are too many hits to list (you're not gonna be able to make a "biggest songs of the year" without listing endless amounts of southern acts...From Ace Hood's Bugatti to August Alina's "I Luv This Sh!t)...and also the extensive feature and production work, where artists of other regions run to get "the southern sound" (see: Nicki ft. 2chainz - Beez in the Trap and Jay-Z ft. Rick Ross - fukkwithme... and the infinite Future hooks out there).. if you think "the south's fallen off"...you're flat out lying to yourself

Off the strength of the clown ass posters bound to come in here just to shyt on NY

This.

The disrespect to the city that gave life to this genre we love so much is disgusting. shyt is like talking shyt back to your parents. :scusthov:

But then again I'd expect nothing from a 90% white Hip Hop board, their parents never taught them any type of respect or humility, they just made them sit on the naughty step when they talked shyt.

Oh and the south fell off in 2006 when you guys stopped making Hip Hop and started making ringtone music. Be mad, you dudes outside of Jay Electronica, Curren$y and a bunch of other cherry picks are a bunch of stupid drug addicted hicks.

The landscape in hip hop has changed in terms of longetivity, platinum sales etc. Those days for the most part are over. Digital downloads, filesharing, social media etc have driven hip hop in a new direction.

The south has started musical trends, dances , language, slang (essentially things that encompass "hip hop")

And don't get me started on how the south's trap sound birthed Chicagos 'drill music' the list goes on

they already fell the fukk off, aint nobody from the south moving no damn units

the top rappers are hov, kanye, j cole, kendrick lamar eminem and drake aint none of them from the south
J cole is from the south and Drake borrows heavily from the region, by way of his boss. I think the premise of the thread is, will the south lose its relevancy to the game? The answer is no. The south has every style you could want in music from lyricists to straight trap music, and the south has the clubs on lock. furthermore hip hop is and always should be quality over quantity. When it comes to my personal rap classics, i have no idea how much each of em sold. All i know is that they slap, which is all that matters. Units aint never meant shyt to the south. UGK hardly ever sold shyt, but Hov love em just like i do.

Hip hop is showing good balance right now from all regions, and its better that way because the fans benefit from that. But make no mistake, the south not even close to being done. The region is too big

Alright, I'll step back and say that my comments were made specifically to any and every one who has shytted on NY this week.

:whew: A lot of that shyt was brewing.

But like I said the South has fallen off musically for a while now, it's popularity has never been in question.

Drake (who I'm not a fan of), Kendrick, Cole.... all of the new school are selling well...doing better numbers and will have longer careers than those southern rappers you're speaking of who created this slang, dances etc etc.

Yes the climate of hip hop has changed, but those 3 rappers prove, in my opinion, that quality content and building a fanbase will lead to longevity.
