Were they "too dependent" or was that what just worked back then? I think a more important point is Why hadn't the government prepared American people to transition out of that "work 30 years at the auto manufacturer and retire with a pension" lifestyle?

Instead of feeding them that Make America Great Again coal mines are comin back bullshyt, govt shouldve been helping that workforce transition to new jobs and industries (e.g. Renewable energy, etc) that same car manufacturing workforce could be the same ones getting trained on building/producing solar panels, EV batteries, electric charging stations, etc
