Will we ever have an open and honest discussion about mental health in the black community?

I see it as normal human beings having a normal reaction to a society that's ill by design. So with me i'm obsessed with the mechanics of society and to do that you gotta pay attention to/study everything even the shyt you don't agree with, and do that for history/older civilizations as well. Especially those.

Not until we establish a black economy to where we are able to have mental health programs specifically made for our people who suffer from mental issues.

No community is down for that discussion. Everybody either ignores or minimizes it or drugs themselves or their kids up. Nobody is really trying to understand and address the root causes of so many of these issues. It's too complex and thusly uncomfortable for most people.

This. Self medicating with drugs and alcohol is probably the worst thing you can do for your mental health. shyt is kind of sad for brehs out there.

I dig, I got alot of homies like you so I know ya struggles.

Me personally as a African American I can never understand why black people would want to raise their children around a whole bunch of cacs. Its gonna developmentally stunt em.

Problem is with immigrants due to racism perpetuated by American media on a global scale, they feel its better to live amongst whites than blacks when they get to this country, ignorant to the understanding of the intricacies of American Culture and History.
I agree...but also my family wanted better for us. Access to good schools, the best in healthcare, groceries, shopping...my siblings and i got the best education...that put us at an advantage that many black people are unfortunately not afforded.

And also...how beneficial is it for a child to grow up around crime? Violence? Drugs? Urban decay? Why raise a black child in the hood when you have the means not to? And western pa doesnt have any black suburbs. There really arent too many black suburban areas in america.

So have a solid racial identity in a predominantly black low income neighborhood or opportunity stability and access to better resources in a predominantly white suburban area?

many of the black people that go to white neighborhoods are looking for safety and a nice clean environment with good schools.

I know there are nice clean black suburbs but they aren't in almost any place you go like nice clean white suburbs.

@1984 I wonder how many mental issues come out of parents beating the shyt out of their children:jbhmm:

I'll be honest with you and I always had these arguments with ppl growing up. "The Hood" aint as bad as motherfukkas or the media make it sound. Its all racist over sensationalized bullshyt.

Ppl do drugs in the hood same way ppl do drugs in the suburbs. There is crime everywhere.

But in the 90's the media put a black face on it to help sway public opinion for laws to put millions of brothers in jail or to justify certain zoning practices when it comes to public funding and education.....but honestly thats a whole different topic.

But I have a question for you, are you truly happy in NYC right now? Cause honestly I feel ppl who flee to places like LA n NY are just running from something. If you aint grow up in those types of area's logically it really makes no sense to flea there and chase shadows your whole life. Sometimes its best to just buckle down and face the demon's head on.

This is true, but most people that do drugs in the suburbs do it within the comfort of their own home, and there isn't a bunch of violent crime with it. Yes there is crime everywhere but there is much more crime in poorer neighborhoods and a lot less crime in wealthier neighborhoods.

This is the truth.

So much pressure is on us to be functional and productive members of society that any hint of weakness is seen as unacceptable.

It's funny because certain weaknesses are actually embraced...substance use, lack of sexual discipline, ignorance. When a person has a obvious physical ailment, people are far more understanding. It seems that if people can't see it, it doesn't exist.

Mental healthy issues seems to be one of those topics that get swept under the rug, much like the incest problem we've had for a long time now.

Yea its fukked up, but it wasnt always like that. "The Hood" pre crack era and post crack era are like night and day. Which is honestly urban decay tied back to how the government pumped crack and guns into these areas during the 90s.

And I kinda understand, I would only move my children to area's with good education opportunities so I do understand why ppl leave. But then the question is, how come majority black area's are so under funded when it comes to public education?

You could always move out of state.

There are plenty of predominently black middle cass neighborhoods nationwide.

I lived in one for a few years. You could walk around at 1AM and feel safe.

I was actually talking about prescription drugs. So many folks just mindlessly taking these hard ass drugs thinking shyt is okay because they have a prescription that some doctor mindlessly prescribed. Not saying that people shouldn't take drugs when necessary but drugs aren't magic cure-alls for every single issue.

Some of those drugs can interfere with medication for mental illness as well.
