I’ve been profiled enough times to have an intimate understanding of racial profiling that also matches up with our history in this country. So I don’t have to have a theoretical discussion with anyone, especially a cop. Would dressing better help in some cases? Yeah. But not as much as we may like to hope.

My philosophy on police is whatever you’re doing you don’t wanna give them any reason to do a double-take and look at you twice, because that’s where it starts. That said, a cop that’s on some racial shyt isn’t gonna care what you’re wearing. All he/she sees is Blackness.

I will say it helps but with some cops shyt won't matter at all. I used to live in a small ass Missouri town. The town itself wasn't too bad with the racism even though there was some but some of the cities you'd pass to get there were. Anytime I'd pass through some of these cities I knew if I passed a cop I was getting pulled over just for being black.

Any time I was dressed up due to heading to a work install they'd be quick to let me go with no hassle. When wearing regular every day clothes I got questioned nonstop and hit with tickets at times. Shouldn't be that way but cops mainly pick on the poorest cause they know they can't afford to go after them legally. They assume someone in a suit might have some money to them and know they can't push shyt as far.

It's fukked up and bullshyt but it does help.

I wear a suit and tie for my job and it still doesn't stop my from getting pulled over by the police once I cross MD, everytime I have to take a trip down south to point where I'd rather just fly or take an Amtrak and rent a car depending on what I do. So does it prevent it, absolutely not.

Since you seem to be a little less triggered and more logical I’ll expand on my theory

Post 1970. It has become less common for all American males to wear suits on a daily basis. The suit has become the uniform of the “professional”. A man with a certain level of status, economic standing and influence.

Back in the day everyone wore suits and often a hat. It was status quo for even working class folks. Brothers wore suits in strip clubs and dog tracks

Now it has a different stigma. (Importance, power, influence, ambition)

My theory is that perhaps certain racist police officers view a Black man in a suit as someone with a certain level of power and connection. He might still be a “nikka” in their eyes. But he might know somebody. He might have a connection to some entity that would hold them more accountable for abuse. I feel that police officers may fear ( not respect) a Black man in a suit a bit more. Because of the image and narrative it presents to potential jurors and society as a whole.

Of course as someone mentioned earlier, being the “brother in a nice suits” creates another set of problems based on jealousy from the potential race soldier.

But we need to stop pretending that things like suits and wedding bands don’t contribute to image. Which was the point Kevin Samuel’s was trying to express with his Birth of a Nation explanation. Image is influential and dangerous.

The Black male in America has a terrible image. Not one person in this thread can deny that fact.


My granddaddy was a police officer , so he taught us the things that his racist co-workers would use to profile us and how to avoid certain scenarios.

Really understanding how they think and why can potentially save your life.

It can help but it must be coupled with something else. That is, the criminals can't start wearing suits while doing crimes to blend in with civilians!

This is what we have now. A blurred line between civilian and criminal. Like it or not, humans categorize and recognize uniforms.

So are civilians trying to be slick, and wear the uniform of criminals. Or are criminals being slick and trying to blend in with civilians?
