I personally just really love algorithms. For an education, I think CS is unmatched. However, Software Engineering is likely to give you better job training. There is no software engineering major in my engineering school.

what was the point of you quoting the article? all i'm saying is. a lot of people have degrees in things they are not even good at once they get into the workplace. i didnt say thats the only reason why people go get stem degrees and end up outside of being programmer or some computer type stuff. that wasnt my point. i know there are all sorts of things you can branch out into with a stem degree. for example, you get that degree and if you're good at statistics you could be involved in the social sciences. SS always needs stats and numbers to write about/talk about to find out whats going on with society. and vice versa. some SS person that was great at stats can take it to the next level and start running the stats for other things outside of the normal social stuff.

but that has nothing to do with what i was referring to which was the point of us talking about what FIF was saying about college and that school mentality.

you can do well in school and terrible on the job. why is that? because school for the most part is not teaching you how to work . its teaching you how to research(so if your job isnt to do research, then a lot of schooling isnt helping you much), its teaching you how to either study hard or cheat hard or both. this can help in some parts of work as in work ethic. but it wont do anything for you when assigned specific tasks and duties.

And yes, what you're doing is actually exactly what you'll be doing in the workforce. Java 1, Java 2, Digital logic, Assembly (using SPIM, MIPS), Digital Security, C++, SQL etc etc.

Every one of those courses/skills you will use directly in your career in some way shape or form (all higher level languages are the same, just different syntax). STEM is the closest thing to trade school you can get a traditional 4 year college.

But for most other majors, its not the same. I don't think you realize just how different STEM is from liberal arts. Its not even remotely comparable.

Very true, there is no supplement for real work experience. Being a good programmer has as much to do with proper documentation and library management as it does with actually knowing the proper syntax/class structure/constructor inheritance/etc etc etc. The latter part your learn in school, the former they never teach you

What most of them are saying is college isnt for everyone. and you know why they send their kids to these great schools? because they are rich. do you know what that means? it means their children are in a more stable environment due to them parent(s) being rich.

50's son. Dame Dash' kids. can all go to college with a free mind. Dame and 50 could not necessarily pull that off as well due to the environment they grew up in. The way you grow up can take you out of the running for college. thats a reality of the situation. some people can make it work. but MOST can't. So then what? If you're not going to college route. whats your other plan? thats the question. because college is not THEE only plan. Its ONE of the plans. there are multiple ways to take care of yourself and your family(Legal/moral ways). choose from one of those methods. it does not always have to be college.
especially when you realize its literally not designed for most people. most people dont have the memory to deal with it. because you're so busy worried about whats going on back at home in the hood. thats why a lot of these dudes on sports scholarships end up flunking out. because they cant focus on the studies part. they have too much hoodisms going on in their mind. rich kids dont have that problem. they have other issues but that aint one of them.

College is for hard workers,(whether thats working hard at studying or cheating)
College is for Very Smart hood kids
College is for Well to do lazy or smart kids

notice when you have a ton of money backing you as a kid you can be lazy or smart and still make it thru college. thats because the elementary school, middle school, high school you went to was on par with other rich kids. meaning you had the best of the best teaching. you were not taught in hood schools with horrible teaching(most schools). so even if you were super lazy and not super intelligent. you still learned something that the average hood kid did not. This is why 50's kids can be all up in college and do well. they didnt grow up like FIF. in those terrible schools.

I've taken three different internships, two different jobs, and have a scholarship, all in different areas and fields, and I'm allowed to explore all of these options because rather than cramming for the exam the night before, I actually spent the semester learning
If you're in school for more than to get a shytty White collar job and club on the weekends, it pays to actually learn something.
