I remember this having a great atmosphere, great cast, but falling apart on the writing side.

Rick Baker killed it with the makeup and IIRC, mentioned the film was going to prioritize practical effects more, especially in the transformation scene, before the studios decided to go overboard with the shoddy CGI work. Similar also happened with ‘The Thing’ prequel in 2011.

I haven't seen that movies in awhile. Tbh I didn't like it when it came out and I saw it twice at the movies

I'd prefer a guy in a suit or an animatronic. Bipedal or quadrapedal doesn't matter to me.
