Piccolo is said to be Toriyama's favorite character.
Hercule is the runner-up. (He said that if there was ever a spinoff of the series it would be about him.)
Vegeta is said to be one of Toriyama's least favorite characters. Toriyama mainly kept him around because he helped to move the plot forward.
Toriyama set 18 up with Krillin to throw him a bone for all of the L's he caught. (He also states that Krillin is canonically the strongest human.)

I never found anything about him hating Goku, but it is kinda suspect how many times he tried to end the show and/or kill him off
