The rumor I believe is that Puff got "extorted" cause had borrowed money to fund Bad Boy without a lot of label impact and paid it back with favors/money. I guess paying back a loan is extortion when it comes to hiphop though.
Puff's pop and his "uncles" were extremely deep , his main goon Wolf was extremely deep, one of the top pushers of BMF Poppa is his cousin, his Haitian nikkas were extremely deep, his man Andrew Campos acting capo with the Gambino's is his man since his teens and the list goes on. Puff is too connected by long ass relationships, blood and shyt. Cats like Suge dreamed of being like Puff to the point where their biggest expense was paying nikkas to be in the position Puff was in by real relationships.
Differense is Puff came up with real G's, he acts like he's the friendliest and coolest dude on earth just like any smart g. As long as cats who should know, knows. He's the inversion of a studio gangster.
