Learned this from my white coworker.

Shyt don’t make sense. I just started a new job and I been working like a mf dog. 0730 and I don’t leave til 4 sometimes 5.

I wanna make a good first impression, bc lord knows the old me was on some bullshyt. I was lazy as fukk and quit or left every other job or internship I had. Now I’m turning 24 im tryna change my ways

But I had some senior ppl be like:ld:slow down you working too much. But I keep getting tagged with side projects. A Nikka can’t barely do the job I was initially hired to do.

I see cacs around my pay grade, talking that shyt like “Idk why you volunteering, that ain’t gon get you no where:childplease:” They always playing the back on some hoe shyt. You know we gotta work twice as hard so I breh tryna hold it down.

Where’s the line brehs I’m conflicted:to:

think those are long work hours brehs :russ:

I work in IT, we have weekly stand ups with our managers where we talk about projects and other bullshyt we are working on. TRUST ME, you dont wanna be the clown who is like.... "uhhh Im chilling this week "

You will be a prime candidate to get cut whenever they decide they want to do a lay off.

Are you in corporate? If so, you have to create the line. Prioritize tasks and say no when you have to. Take like 30 minutes before the work day starts to prioritize everything you have to do. Block out time on your calendar for each project, lunch breaks, meetings, etc.

This is one of like 3 posts that isnt talking our of their ass in here.

I can tell alot of yall are young, havent been in corporate long, or have a very unique experience.

When u youre younger and have the energy and time you should load up on projects (dont overextend yourself), if youre working 50 hours thats normal. Shine in the opportunities youre given so you build credibility. Become someone that they cant afford to lose and start networking and getting familiar with the powerbrokers in your department or column (dont tell your immediate coworkers that you are meeting and working with those people). Work witb your mgr to develop are career track and about 6 months in when your resume is looking better start floating your resume and developing other opportunities. When its time to get a big raise or get promoted you will get flack, thats when having an outside offer on the table, being indisposable on projects and having the backing of big wigs will force their hand.

Doing it this way requires some sweat equity, but its a way that works 90% of the time.

But being fake busy, avoiding work, leaving right at 4:00 when there is work left to do is going to get u fuked up as a black man that justed started there.

That’s what ppl told me before. But I’m in the military, an officer so Nikkas salute me, but I just came in so all the senior officers can task me w/shyt. I’m stationed at a base but it feels like a corporate setting with all the politics.

So that’s what I did. Wanted to show initiative and volunteered for a major project with the general who’s over our district, Nikka runs 26 states and I was the point of contact while he visited us for 4 days. And got told to handle a couple things with another huge project this Friday. I reported in the day after Christmas and I’m in meetings with the CO, XO, and department heads. They like:gucci:who is the dude? Bc Nikkas didn’t even know I reported to the unit yet and they got me doing this bull.

What has me fcked up is some cacs in my shop just do what their assigned job is, and they been getting promoted so far:yeshrug:I even got black friends at other units and they told me straight up their command don’t make them do all these side projects and shyt. Got me wondering why they have other junior officers at my unit who can do the shyt I’m doing but they put it on the guy who only been there for 2 months

It’s just corny bc I got ppl in my shop telling me verbatim to play the back, dont volunteer for anything. But I was taught to stand firm on ya name and handle business. So I’m willing to do some extra shii to get good evals when mine are due

think those are long work hours brehs :russ:

Breh, Nikkas routinely leave at 3. But I be staying til 5 and shii.
