You were right, the UK was neck and neck with the US in the computer's creation, but it was Americans who truly advanced it to the machine you know and use today.

You can't judge an empire on cultural and scientific achievements based on their current societal permeation.
The scientific advances of Han China were, in relative terms, at LEAST as important and groundbreaking as those of industrial Britain.

Oh wait...what about PAPERMAKING? Does that strike you as marginally important? Or negative numbers? A wee bit important, yeah? Compass? Gunpowder? Paper currency? The goddamn TOOTHBRUSH?
Han China was a thriving, modern civilization when most in modern-day Britain were painting themselves in the woods. Literally the only reason they did not continue to advance was because of certain cultural idiosyncrasies that no longer exist.
And besides, the inventors of all those modern-day machines you listed are somewhat debatable. In some cases, multiple inventors improved upon each other's solutions seamlessly -- a Scot based on work by a German based on work by a Hungarian. The first working TV system was invented by an American, even if the first "moving picture' was invented by an Englishman. In other cases, there were massive outside contributions -- without the US Department of Defense inventing ARPANET, there would be no World Wide Web.
Conversely, we know almost indisputably that China was the first to use all of the aforementioned inventions. Before anyone else.
So yeah. Not buying it.

I think it would have to be the British Empire.
Through the waves of exploration, mercantilism and imperialism, the British were able to skillfully use these developments to expand the Empire and accumulate extraordinary wealth through their colonies across the world. Geopolitics played a significant role in their success. (Geopolitics?!?
) They dominated the globe for the better part of 400 years.
Their biggest mistake was mistreating the Thirteen Colonies and raping them with taxes while significantly diminishing the civil liberties of those in the colonies (hmm, sounds familiar?
) leading to the eventual American Revolution (a revolution in America? 
) and the birth of the United States of America. What's crazy is that many British settlers were content with their lives in the Thirteen Colonies for the most part. They were 
off plantations and the slave system and had access to large tracts of land, if they truly desired it. Life in the Thirteen Colonies for those fortunate to arrive in the Americas was a much better life than they experienced back home but most still remained loyal to the Crown. They rebelled because they were really getting fukked.
What's scary is some of those similarities to many of the issues we face today. Looks like America grew up to be just like their Daddy
