The ref counter the 1-2-3 and rang the bell with piper covering Goldberg and gave the title to Bret

My only guess is Piper missed his cue or someone at the last minute threw Piper in the mix. Because Hall and Nash both looked confused, Bret was pissed because the ref counted too early.

To this day, I still don't know if that Wrestlemania hardcore battle royal botch was the referee's fault or Hardcore Holly's fault
Either Holly covered Crash too early which fukked up the timing of the match ending, or the referee started the count too quick, which would've also fukked up the timing. Apparently, the time limit was supposed to run out before the ref could've gotten to a 3-count, which would've had Crash walk out with the belt (if I remember correctly)
Either way....that was one of the most blatantly obvious "match outcome" botches I've ever seen
