Nevertheless, it ought to provide us with some insight. The S.E.C.’s interest in Texas A&M becomes easier to understand once you recognize that the Aggies have among the largest fan bases in the country. The fact that Notre Dame’s fans are dispersed throughout the country explains why they’ve been loathe to join a conference.

Their numbers are fairly equal and they share a market with each other with similar national spread. One is not signifigantly bigger in fanbase than the other.

I'm sure theres some bias in that but its not relevant seeing as neither of the hillbilly backwoods colleges have fan bases rivaling major schools.
