The person who hasn't played can give an opinion on said sport.

The question is if his opinion is less valid than someone who has played.
True.

I believe with respect to the latter, one can make a somewhat less risky gamble by betting the person who hasn't played has less validity than the person who has, HOWEVER, just on its face, not enough information is provided to reasonably claim the person who hasn't played is DEFINITELY less valid than someone who has.

Especially when considering how much goes into what is discussed about professional sports. Boxing, MMA, and other 1 on 1 sports probably make a stronger case regarding the premise but when we speak of team sports, we talk about everything from
  • Management - Contracts, Roster Building, Drafting, Effect of Media presence on player performance & psyche, etc
  • Individual Performance - Skillset of the average player vs. one who's mastered the sport
  • Coaching - Plays, Substitutions, Roster Chemistry, Ability to Develop Rookie Talent
  • Player Motivations - Importance of Winning a Title, When Someone should Retire, Importance of Low Stress Envirornment, etc.
Not to mention countless other variables. The full analysis of a professional sport encompasses so much that many people of different backgrounds - but who actually are dedicated to studying the particular sport in question - can have really unique insight that a person who has played the sport but has not shown an understanding of the various other elements outside of individual performance may not have.

I hope I'm making some sense.

It's making complete sense.

The original post is more suited towards everyday people. Not necessarily professionals or entertainers.

You can browse through these forums and see people exposing themselves as never having played before but they are he ones dishing out the most critique.

Lol, true.

I would concede that if you see an off the wall irrational opinion about something, then it's a safe bet that the person probably had no valid experience to draw from.

People who have experience playing a sport tend to not have wildly extreme stances.

To an extent I don't think people realize how hard it is just to be the best in your neighborhood
then to go on and be the best in your school
then the best in your city
then the best nationally
then one of the best globally
it's so much competition so yeah some guys may not be as good as other pros but they're far from scrubs if you make it to the NBA you're one of the 300 something best players in the world that's a hell of a feat

Kendrick Perkins still trash tho

Go look at that thread where NBA rookies are answering questions about the NBA's history, then tell me actually playing the game should make your opinion hold more weight. :usure:

On a macro level, yeah. I’ll take somebody who played ball’s opinion over someone who hasnt’s in a vacuum. But any individual can become educated on the subject and have a valid opinion :yeshrug:

Only area where I think that experience is really invaluable is when you’re talking about mentality, approach, team dynamics, etc.
