just the surveillance aspect of a gated community makes my skin crawl. no doubt theres 99% support for a surveillance state by people who prefer to live those places.

In certain parts of Florida it's the norm and I know for a fact that the residents aren't rich and some even drive beaters
Rent for a 2 bedroom is less than 2K, anybody with a decent job can afford that.

nah. and in my milieu, gated subdivisions are not desirable communities for people that possess both money and taste. gated subdivisions are linked with middle america in the 90's. and being associated with a specific time and place, the desire to live in one is seen as a trend and therefore trendy.

what's ideal is a community that has high invisible social barriers as opposed to high physical barriers. those are the stealth under-the-radar communities that you don't hear much about or even know where they are.

I don't want to live in a gated community where the majority doesn't want me among them. However a little detached place away from loud neighbors..sign me up.

Hell no. I do not like the idea in general, not to mention never wanting to have to deal with an HOA. Plus i like being in the city and not in the burbs .
