Simple question. The internet has become an essential part of people's lives. Many government services have shifted online and many people are getting overcharged for internet access.
Social media has also become extremely toxic and is filled with scammers, ads, spam, and algorithms designed to keep you angry and on the platform with low vibrational content.
For most people there are few alternatives. So what if everyone who has a library card and account can use that to create an online ID that they can use to access government services, use a free, ad-free and algorithm-free and community moderated(with clear terms of service) social media platform? People with tech skills whose jobs were sent overseas or automated with AI would manage the platform, and the public internet service. There would be a public works program focused on getting people to work building the broadband networks and maintaining the infrastructure. The quality of the internet doesn't have to be good enough to stream 4k content on Netflix or whatever, but just good enough for you to stream most shows, browse the web and do the basic stuff you use the internet for on a regular basis.
There would also be government employees whose job it would be to reach out to old people who arent tech savvy and troubleshoot/teach them.
With people back to work, the program can be funded by a mix of sales taxes, increased taxes on corporations, and increased tax on anyone with an annual income(regardless of if it's a loan from a bank) of over 400 thousand dollars a year.
