Samoa Joe in TNA, he was fun to watch chasing the belt against Angle. Once he won it he had a barely memorable 4 month run as champ and never got the chance to be champion again after that.

It's a sad truth that a lot of dudes kinda get boring when they become champ. They were a lot more interesting when they were chasers.

The most common booking formula in wrestling history is the popular babyface challenger chasing the heel champ. Heels tend to have longer runs as champ. Don't ask me to provide statistics, I ain't that kind of wrestling geek :comeon:, but I'm pretty confident I'm right about that. Charismatic babyface title chasers tend to draw the numbers.

Once the babyface finally gets the belt, it's like "Okay, what the fukk do we do with this dude now?"

Also add the fact that champions are wrestling on free tv and defending their belts way more today than they did in the past. When Punk was babyface during his 434 days as champion he was wrestling on tv every other week to the point where you got burned out watching him very fast. Once he switched to being a heel he mainly fought on ppvs and on the occasional Raw making his title run a little bit more important and watchable.

Cena
Orton
Taker
Jeff Hardy
He who shall not be named
Foley
Mysterio

conversely there are guys who I feel are better when holding the title than when chasing it:

HHH
Big Show
Mark Henry
Batista
Jericho
Edge
Lesnar

Heels are always better title carriers, it just makes sense. While having a babyface chaser who can get the better of the heel champ yet get screwed somehow can draw because it plays on some of our deepest human emotions. Psychologically we tend to connect to the chaser since most of us chase a goal in our real lives.

Nobody mentioned DDP yet huh?

I think the general consensus with DDP was that he would have been a great champ, but they waited so long to pull the trigger that nobody cared by the time he won.

They just had to wait forever to give my dudes DDP and Booker T the title. :to:

Also to add to that list of guys who are better with the belt. I have to add JBL. When he had that long reign, his heel game was top notch.

Idk how you all are mentioning orton. His best eras were as IC champ, and as psycho heel champ fighting off cena and triple H.

MARK HENRY when they actually had him chasing the belt was awesome...i barely remember the reign but i definitely remember the chase and his payoff
