A sigma male is a man who doesn't have much friends and doesn't get p*ssy not because he wants these things and they're out of reach, but because its a hassle for him and he's happy how he is. Basically someone in the same boat as incels but who doesn't make 'not getting attention from women' a major part of his mindset. He knows what he has to do to get them, but just can't be bothered to do all that shyt.

I don't mind if it gives these incel guys something to aspire to instead of spending all their time online complaining. If women can't get attention from men, they go on diets, they get personal trainers, they pay for implants, cosmetic surgery, BBL, whatever they need to do and secure that man. Whereas incels would rather spend their time talking about how women are too picky and nobody will answer their texts. Nah nikka, you gotta save your money and get on that Personal Training program and get some gains, get limb lengthening surgery and shoe lifts if you're shorter than most women, pay for that FUE if you're bald. Get a jaw implant and some dimples. Do what you have to do if getting women is really that important to you. Sitting online stewing in rage and depression aint it.

I see the sigma male category as a new way of getting these guys to cope with their status and move on to being less obsessed with their personal failings.

pretty much that.
I was going to say someone with low self esteem but if they're popular they're putting themselves out there.
or it would have to be a person that is extremely picky or just in the wrong social settings

Alpha Male = good-looking captain of the football team. Good grades, broads love him for just existing and he goes out of his way to stay the Alpha (wears nice clothes, clowns on the Betas etc.).

Beta Male = backup QB. Beta is actually very similar to the Alpha but just a notch behind. Capable of becoming the Alpha (think Friday Night Lights or Varsity Blues).

Sigma Male = the nerdy kid that loves video games, programming and anime but has also trained in Muay Thai and Judo since he was 5 years old. Hates the "popular" kids but wouldn't want to be Alpha even if given the chance.

Basically...the Beta wants to be the Alpha and is always chasing the Alpha. The Sigma may or may not be capable of being the Alpha but he doesn't care even if he was.
