It's not so much they thought of him as an actual zombie, but that he coulda been sick or crazy. For all they knew, dude coulda been on meth or had aids or some shyt...think they wanna risk dude biting them or something?

Bet money most of them nikkas thought he was a real zombie. Meth nor AIDS gonna make you look or ACT like that...maybe acid or something laced but i get your point tho that they could have thought he had something.
