They said the game had been on sale many times since it launched on the switch but sales started taking off once word of mouth spread once it became free on gamepass.

A lot of people (myself included) are subbed at a massive discount, it’ll be interesting to see what the numbers look like 2/3 years from now at full price ($15+ pm)
As it is, it’s a loss leader to gain market share, their 1st party titles need to hit (& hit repeatedly) for it to be a success
