People Are Complaining That A New Xbox Commercial With Aaron Paul Is Causing Their Xbox To Turn On

The new Xbox One commercial has some unexpected consequences.

The ad features "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul using the Xbox One's voice controls to play a game, powering on the Xbox with a "Xbox on" command.

"I was scared at first thinking that my Xbox One was possessed. But then I started thinking the CIA was controlling it and monitoring my activities" said one concerned XBox One owner Mike Litoris. "My XBox was unplugged, but it still turned on."

The problem is, the Xbox One sitting in people's living rooms actively listens for the very voice commands in the commercial. The result? The commercial is booting up people's Xbox One without their permission.

People first began complaining about the far-reaching effects of Aaron Paul's "Xbox on" command on Reddit and Twitter. For those who already purchased Titanfall, people have even claimed the commercial causes their Xbox One to load up the game.

A few solutions do exist: People can return the Xbox for a PS4, or they can always disconnect the hardware responsible for the always-on listening feature, Xbox One's Kinect sensor.

From an advertising standpoint, while the Aaron Paul commercial is clearly targeted at people without an Xbox One, it could be possible for Xbox to utilize this accidental fluke by crafting ads specifically for Xbox One users. Gamers probably wouldn't be happy about it, but it's interesting to realize Xbox has the technology in place to create a commercial that turns on people's Xbox and brings up an advertised game demo or purchase page.

Microsoft did not comment on the unplugged Xbox One issue.

:russ: They didn't think about this when they made this commercial?
If you have an XB1, you most likely have your TV connected thru your xbox
So the commercial wouldn't affect your xbox since it was on already
If you think this is some MAJOR issue, you'd be mistaken :ez:

Xbox One owners are complaining that a new TV advert is switching their consoles on without their permission.

The ad - featuring Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul - has the actor say "Xbox On" near its start.

The instruction appears to trigger the machine's Kinect voice/motion sensor, activating the console.

A spokesman for the firm said it had no comment at this time, but noted that previous ads had also featured voice commands.

Many people have posted comments about the problem on social media sites.

"Aaron Paul just turned my Xbox One via the Xbox advert. (Which triggered the IR [infrared] blaster to switch my TV off..)"tweeted Qassim Farid, a UK-based tech blogger.

Chesterfield-based Tom Neal wrote: "@Xbox your new TV advert is annoying the hell outta me. Aaron Paul keeps turning my console on… #stooooop"

The effect has also been noted on news discussion site Reddit's Xbox section, with one commentator writing: "Damn commercial keeps turning on my xbox! Lol"

The Xbox One's Kinect sensor features microphones and colour and infrared cameras
The post reflects the attitude of many console owners who have posted about the matter who appear more bemused than angered by the glitch.

This is not the first time such an effect has been reported.

In November Xbox One owner Tom Kimberl posted a video to YouTubeshowing that an internet ad that featured the command "Xbox go to Dead Rising 3" launched the game on his system.

Users affected by the issue do have the ability to turn off the Kinect sensor, which prevents the console responding to voice commands.

The issue has parallels with an effect played for laughs in the TV series 30 Rock where a voice-controlled television went haywire when on-screen characters mentioned its trigger words.

Shouldn't the Xbox already be on if they're watching tv ?

Both of these post explain it for me. My Xbox One stays on due to my DirecTV Genie being connected to it

I've seen that commercial and it didn't happen to me but launch day I was watching a YouTube video and the person on the video said that and the Xbox powered up.
