Was the first person on Xbox Live.JENNA PITCHERXbox Director of Development and founder of Xbox Live and XNA, Boyd Multerer, has left Microsoft to do “something new,” the software developer announced on Twitter today.



Multerer joined Microsoft full-time in 1997 after doing contract work for the corporation since 1994. In 2000, he founded the development team for Xbox Live and was the first person on the system’s online networking service, which launched in November 2002.

Multerer left Xbox Live in 2004 to found and lead Microsoft’s project to make gaming consoles for accessible for independent developers with the XNA programming language. He then lead Xbox 360 OS teams before moving on to being instrumental to the design of the Xbox One’s core architecture. The new-gen console consists of three operating systems that allows for multitasking between games, apps and navigation.

Multerer was working on “unannounced secret stuff at Microsoft” before revealing his departure today.
