The internals of Microsoft’s next gen console have been ripped apart in a tear down walkthrough by Ifixit. In doing so a tiny little detail has caught our eye. Among the various components revealed, Ifixit found out that the Xbox One consists of 8GB of NAND flash memory.

The exact manufacturing model is SK Hynix H26M42003GMR 8 GB eMMC NAND Flash. SK Hynix is a South Korean company that deals in semiconductor technologies delivering RAM and flash memory. On digging through the internet we found out the specification sheet for the chip.

The sheet reveals some interesting details about the flash memory in terms of its density [density is the amount of bits i.e. information that can be stored in a given area]. So the more the density, the more the information that can be stored. H26M42003GM features a density of 32Gb [gigabits] i.e. 4GB [gigabytes] across two stacks. That makes it 4 GB per stack.

Now we are not sure what this flash memory is being used for. But we have a couple of guesses:

• The system might be storing temporary states [resume/suspend]. It is an erasable memory after all.
• Video gameplay capture.
• Flash memory is known to be quick, so it might also be used by the apps. App snapping calls may be utilizing this.
• Quick read and write access by the OS.

As mentioned earlier, these are all guesses. Hopefully we will get some sort of solid confirmation about its purpose in the coming days. What do you guys make out of this? Let us know in the comments section below.

I have not chosen a nextgen system yet but they list :

• The system might be storing temporary states [resume/suspend]. It is an erasable memory after all.
• Video gameplay capture.
• Flash memory is known to be quick, so it might also be used by the apps. App snapping calls may be utilizing this.
• Quick read and write access by the OS.

All of this can already be done with the PS4 memory. Is this just a bonus for Xbone?

It can reduce overhead from the media features while trying to load assets from disc or read/write to hdd.
One thing to know is the ps4 actually also has 256MB of ram extra for some ARM core. So both are full of surprises

Both systems have 8gb of RAM, but now its known that the xbox doesn't even have to use any of its 8gb of ram to handle this stuff. I'm sure it uses a combination depending on need, but it has 16gb to work with

PS4 has 8gb total, then someone just said it also has an additonal 256mb ram for an arm core
The PS4 because of this cannot do most of the things the xbox can do. Instant switching sony says hopefully in 2014 Multitasking is supposed to be very limited as well.
I'm not sure what you think the PS4 can do, but it cannot do what xbox can. And this threads topic has a lot to do with that

You look like a clown for making this thread. The only reason they put 8gb in there is because it prolly cost next to nothing to buy this ancient memory.

Clearly the areas highlighted as "possible" options that can be done with this "secret" ram can be done with the "non secret" ram that both consoles have. The suggestion made was why is this so significant, if you were not able to read outside of the context.

Also, son..... relax. I have not chosen either console yet so I am above such stannery or brand loyalty............. yet

Nothing that this "special" ram is going to provide will make anyone change their minds on why one is above the other..... its not like "oh shyt, now this console can order burgers too...I got have it now"

Its really not that complex. The GDDR5 is moving far more data and moving it much faster than the MMC memory. Its basic math breh. If the PS4 can move 176 GB/s and this MMC moves 20 MB/s is it really that hard to fathom? I did mean to write over a TB, but you still get the point.
