Yes. The PS4 needs a media player to play the media files downloaded from the various VOD services.

but that's the thing, they can lock it down to various services. doesn't the ps4 not even support external storage? so you can't even get anything onto the HDD without downloading it from a supported service

If a flash drive can work, an external hard drive can work. I think Sony means you can't run or install games on an external hard drive.

They limited it for a reason, and it was to force you to buy from them, just because it can play those files doesnt mean they will allow you to access the option to play them, just like bluetooth, and how they are limiting it to just their devices even tho it can connect to any bluetooth

First of all, Bluetooth is an open standard, So if Sony-branded BT headsets work, 3rd-party bluetooth headsets will work.

I did some research, the reason bluetooth headset don't work on PS4 is probably because the Headset Profile (HSP) is disabled. I'm gonna also assume the reason the PS3's BD remote controls doesn't work is because the Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) is disabled. But profiles can be activated with a firmware update, though. In fact, they already announced they will patch in Bluetooth headsets after launch in the FAQ:

No. A 3.5mm jack headset should work no problem. I mean the headset that comes with the PS4 is a measly ear piece with a mic. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if you someone plugs up their 360 headset into the DS4.

We are talking bluetooth tho
Well, it's gonna be patched in post-Launch.
Yeah when is that tho, they didnt give any time frame on it, bluetooth should be there no matter how you try to spin it, this is a calculated move by sony imo

Oh I was just talking about the 3.5mm jack. I don't know about USB. Honestly this is a non issue for me as the system comes with a mic. If blutooth works then cool, if not fukk it. I have a mic already.

Its a none issue for me too, because i am getting an xbox, but My main point for bringing up bluetooth is because sony sees that their is money to be made, and they will make it, thats why we see standarize things like mp3 and Bluetooth not working unless it is from them.
How did they take years to make the PS4 but somehow couldnt get in Bluetooth and MP3 playback, the answer is they could have.

Even if you feel that PS4 was rushed and the adding of the extra 4GBs of ram somehow messed things up, they would have still have simple things like Bluetooth and MP3 ready.

Sony needs money and they have every right to make it how they see fit, but the blinders need to come down from some fans
