The way the immigration system works in this country is actually very smart. The US tends to seek out the best and brightest from other countries.
Even refugees, who are a more random sampling, are made to have sponsors who will help them get settled/find jobs/find housing. And with DVs (diversity visas), even though the are supposed to be random, they tend to weed out less desirable applicants in later stages.
Basically the US tries its best to make sure you don't come over here a be a bum.
But I also can't discount the drive that people from poverty tend to have + their better money management. (My parents wouldn't buy us shyt..no jordans, no nintendo, no leathers. We went to school in the late 80s/early 90s in clothes they bought at the flea market and lived in project housing...so they could save money up and buy a house in the suburbs for better schools.)
