whatever he used is encased in the snow keeping it almost frozen while the area of the fire and heat is escaping up towards the chimney... which again is probably a material that doesn't retain heat.
the fumes are going UP because fire needs oxygen to survive.
its getting its oxygen through the hole and area and sukking it into the fire that then dissipates upwards....
i doubt its so warm in there to begin with. the fire is SMALL
