I love New York
But man.... I tell you....
When you leave and live somewhere else for a long time.... it's not the same when you go back.
Especially if you live in the city, life is so fast and there's crazy people everywhere and people yelling at each other at every corner.
If move to a tranquil suburb and live there for a few years, when you go back to NY you will be happy you left, especially depending on where you are in life.
I mean I wouldn't want to start a family in NY
And I'm the opposite. Have lived in Manhattan for over 10 years (rent stabilized so my rent only goes up a little every year. In fact, it went down last year by $50 a month. Still don't know why).
Anyway, I'm originally from DC though I've been here since college. My family has a house in the suburbs of Silver Spring, MD and I go to visit often - even moreso now that I can work from home because I can stay there longer without having to burn vacation time. US suburbs are wack. They were built to be heavily car centric and isolated unlike European suburbs that are more communal, and have much better pedestrian, or non driver options. I've thought about moving out of NYC over the years, and I still might, but whenever I think about it too much I think about how much I hate spending too much time in the suburbs, and if I were to move to a non NYC urban area it would be like why don't I just live in NYC? Yeah, it's a love hate relationship with the city for sure but overall I still feel it's like nowhere else in America - but to be clear you have to have the means and a certain makeup to make the most out of it that's true.
