The reason promos aint what they used to be is because the need aint what it used to be. Harley Race had to talk people into buying tickets for the show and he got paid based on how well or how bad he did of getting those tickets sold. By the time Sheamus comes out and bores people to death with an awful promo for next week at the PPV, the PPV has been on sale for 3 months and most the tix have been sold, and anyone watching at home is gonna watch it anyway because theyre paying $10 a month for the network. Not to mention outside of WM and SummerSlam main event nobody knows what matches are happening until the show is close to starting anyway. If some guy is writing my promo and my promo doesnt even matter becuase "the brand sells the show", of course my promo isn't gonna be as hot as a dude who was cutting a promo for his house payment that month

Exactly. It's a promo - an advertisement for the match. You had to sell your feud to the audience in order to stay on top. There is no need for this fundamentally in the WWE. There are great talkers (Miz, Bray and Heyman), but the promotion doesn't breathe for the business anymore.

Outside the E seem to be the best place to find passionate, match-selling promos these days. I've always enjoyed the Jay Briscoe and recently EC3 has been cutting some good ones.

There is a whole bunch of shyt, but basically probably aside from Dean Ambrose or Punk, no one looks like they want to instigate a brawl backstage. Their main man Roman probably is tough for sure, but you can see through the vernier that he probably just wants to puff a blunt and relax instead of starting shyt.

My take is that the problem is the WWE in particular is overly scripted. The best promo men and characters to me were where they took the real personality of a guy, and it morphed over time into.....like the old Spinal Tap joke......Turned up to 11....this one goes to 11. So Stone Cold and the Rock aren't exactly like they.....but they took a part of their personality that is a 6 and turned it up to 11.

Because of that, you can riff on the mic and with experience it can be good most of the time. You get BULLET POINTS to hit, but you fill in the blanks.

This is just an example of what I'm getting at....Now TNA has horribly executed a lot of things, but they were really close to having something interesting and they blew it IMO. Bully Ray had turned himself into this kind of character......the real him up to 11.....and James Storm was the real him up to 11. Those two if they had a feud where Bully Raw was all New Yawk Bully and Storm was Nashville Cowboy....and let them loose on the mic....that could have been good. But they failed in another way. Its not about whether you like those two guys in particular. Take any two guys with a real personality and visualize their bullet point feud and it could be better than a script. They might not all work, but that is where GREATNESS comes from.

Punk, love him or hate him had that going on. Its not about whether you like or don't like a particular guy, its about whether that guy carries a personality. I'm sure they could do that with a lot of the guys in WWE now, but how many of them are doing anything even remotely in the ball park of their real personality? Ambrose could work but he is so cartoony scripted IMO. But WWE, even if they have that personality OVERLY SCRIPTS them. Brock is great, but Heyman is boring and repetitive now as his mouthpiece. One reason this Shane thing is so hot is that it feels so real...an aspect of the real feelings personality....turned up to 11. Not that it IS real, but it is harnessed versions of real. And back in the day, those guys could make it feel real because they became that guy in some ways....`

Those epic Flair, Dusty promos........can you imagine of some goofy sitcom writer wrote out their promos? And its not really the writers' fault either. They are writing for a character. If you are going to go that way, you almost should hire actors and train them to fake fight. I personally prefer wrestlers who have a real personality that get shaped over time.

Im glad you said that about heyman i have never rated him to me his boring and takes too long. Jim Cornette is miles better i remember him saying something to another wrestler about people in the town knowing the color of her bedroom or something :wow:

Heyman uses facts and sells a fight and hes been doing it since WCW. Heyman has never been a character so he didnt need to use much imagery. He told you about both combatants, what the stakes were and who would win. He hyped the fight and sold the fight. Boring is relative but i def saw what he was trying to accomplish. I wouldnt compare him to Heenan, because he simply isnt like Heenan.

Cm punk cut the last, I am gonna righteously kick yo motherfukk'n ass on the mic and in the ring in the feud with the rock.
Then swagged all over the undertaker right after that.
To put in perspective how great a promo guy he was all time.
Even amidst the neutered corporate shilling the WWE succumbs to. when it neuters talent via promo/vignette.
The problem is no promo guy is really going to get over on the mic.
All because this promotion is made to showcase only hhh, period.
So the WWE will never have another great promo guy till hhh is incapable of winning the title and burying talent.
Which may never happen and seeing another great promo guy in the WWE will never happen.
All because you can not build hhh as the goat wrassler by spreadsheet.
When he gets owns as much as the rock and Mick owned him via promo while scsa was absent.
So, the main issue with the WWE is.
it refuses to phase out and move on from the person, completely.
who destroyed the draw of the boom, the son-in-law, hhh.
